- Inspiration -
For my Block Print I decided to look through one of my favorite art movements, the German expressionism movement. While looking through many different artists I came across Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, his art immediately spoke to me. The imperfect lines and choppiness of his art was very appealing to me, the amount of details he's able to put into his work with just using black and white was astonishing.
- Planning-
Starting the Drafting I knew I wanted to have a girl having the art focused on her face. I decided to focus on the background first and what would be surrounding the girl in the middle.
I wanted to create a sense of urgency within the art so I decided to have eyes in the background. The eyes would be placed all around the girl having them all stare at her. These eyes would represent other people watching the girl waiting for an answer and waiting for her to make a choice between parents. While drawing the eyes I realized that I could also use clocks in a similar way. The melting clocks would create an unsettling tension. These clocks would represent the time going by and that the girl is running out of time to think and that she needs to make a choice very soon. Lastly the hands, I knew that I definitely wanted the hands within the art. These hands would be the most important part of the surrounding background. The hands represent the parents themselves, reaching out to the girl in the middle. I had contemplated on adding features to be able to distinguish the hands between mom and dad, but in the end I decided against it as it wouldn't add any significance to the art. |
