Overview
Title: Wonderland Size: 12 in x 11 in Medium: digital art Date: Aug 2023 Exhibition Text
Wonderland is a piece that emulates the art style of the classic children's book Alice in Wonderland. Taking inspiration from (person) I replicated the line work as well as the coloring to make my piece seem 'authentic'. I had wanted it to portray a whimsy from the original work. |
-Inspiration-
For my inspiration I took a look at the illustrations from the original Alice in wonderland book and posters used for circuses. I really liked the scratchy feeling that the Alice in wonderland illustrations had since it gives a lot more character to drawings. I also really liked the composition from the circus posters and how neat and clean they are. Since Alice in wonderland already
-Planning-
The first thing that I have to plan out is the main format that I want to follow so I sketch out my ideas out real quick. I took inspiration from multiple different posters used for circuses to format these sketches. I wanted to have a layout that would really show the progression of the story so I decided to use the upper right layout.
Once I was set on the format of the drawing I went on to sketching out the characters I wanted. I chose the most iconic characters from Alice in wonderland since it would make it easier to identify the characters. I chose Alice, Mad Hatter, The Rabbit, The Cat and the queen. These characters were the most important through out the story and are the most recognizable.

-Process-
Next thing I work on Is the linework, I make areas darker and added more detail like in the fur of both the rabbit and cat. I then move on to choosing the color for the background and letters, I went back and forth from grayscale to normal because I wanted to make sure the colors would work together well.
I decided that I would keep the characters without colors since It would fit better with my inspirations and it made it look nicer.

Lastly for the final details I went in and made the character heads a light gray and went in to do more shading. I used cross hatching to give a more messy look to match the original Alice in wonderland illustrations.
I also went in and made the lines thicker where the characters overlapped each other. This was to make it easier to separate them from one another. |
-Critique-
Similarities: In the line art you can notice that I used a similar method since I also used crosshatching to give the art more texture just like my inspiration. I also kept my work in black and white just like my inspiration and only used shading to give depth to the art.
Differences: The differences is that My work is more cleaner unlike my inspiration with more messy art. I also ended up using color for the background which is different from my inspiration since it doesn't have any color through out the work.

-Reflection-
I had a lot of fun on this project since I was able to work with a medium that I like using. I had a hard time being able to make an artwork that was clean like the circus posters but still had the character of the Alice in wonderland illustrations. Although In the end I think I was able to manage them evenly well. This was actually my first project where I was able to use cross hatching in my work, originally I didn't really like it but this project really made me appreciate it in works.
