This art piece uses 3 different artworks to show the progression of how food's quality has gone down. Starting off with a clean good apple it represents how food was healthy and easy to access but with the time food has gotten worse and more expensive. |
-Inspiration-
When looking for inspiration for this project I started off by looking at the work of Andy Warhol. I liked the use of repetition he use within his art and I wanted to incorporate that within my own art but with a twist. Since I wanted my art to represent the progression of how food has gone down in quality while the prices go up I would use the same base for all 3 pictures while changing aspects to convey that meaning.
|
Since what I want to do is a triptych I wanted to look at how other artists portray this concept. Taking a look at this art work I liked the fact that the apple was placed in the same place throughout all 3 art works just with difference. I also liked that the artist showed progression through the art with art and that's something I want to include within my own art.

-Planning-
When I first started working on this piece of work I already knew what kind of concept I wanted to do. I wanted to do a food triptych this would mean I would have to include food in some way within all 3 artworks that are completely separate but they work together once they are put together. This is my basic Idea and ill really develop my meaning while I work on my sketches since I don't have a clear idea as the very beginning.
For my First Idea I just drew 3 different meals at different times of day, this was just the first thing that came to mind so I just decided to sketch it out. When I finished I sort of liked the idea but I really didn't like that there was no meaning behind it personally so I didn't want to continue with this idea any further. While for my next sketch Idea it was the complete opposite. I decided that since food is such an important aspect in my own culture that I would represent that within my own art. I wanted to represent the contrast in my Mexican and American side within is art by having one poser for each side having a food that represents them and for the last drawing it would be a huge mix and mass of foods from both sides. This concept was something I liked but it wasn't something I was 100 percent satisfied with
Finally I came up the idea to represent the process of how food has gone down in quality with time. With the rising amounts of food deserts good healthy and affordable food is becoming harder to come by. I wanted to use an apple as the main focal point of each image since apples are commonly connected with health. While the images progresses the apple will get more rotten to show health declining.

-Process-
|
The first thing I did was make a new updated concept sketches, in this I decided to use a different perspective to really enhance the meaning to a new level. Using anti perspective it made the apple look even bigger and that was to represent the "bigger then life" idea and how the apple represents food and health in this work. I also changed how the lettering would look, I wanted them to all share a similar look so I decided instead of making all of them look different and in different places I would have them look the same in text style and spacing. I wanted to keep this part out of the sketch at first in order to really focus on the apple and the other aspects since those are the most important to me.
|
I then added flat colors, this is where I would choose the color scheme. I then also worked on the background for all the apples. In order to really represent the different stages on where the health is I wanted to use the background to also represent that. For the first drawing I went with a clean and rich look with the panel wall. The second background is wood because its not as nice at the first wall but not the worst it could be. The last background will be plain dirt, this is the worst it could be since its not really a wall but just dirt.

|
The next thing that I wanted to work on is the apple itself. I went with a classic red since that's the most common color though of when thinking of apples. The first apple will be just a clean and nice apple representing how food was originally all normally healthy and affordable. The second apple would be mostly the same just having some spots be rotten and unconsumable. This represents a middle part where food was somewhat heathy and somewhat affordable. Lastly the last apple would be the worst looking out of all of apple since it represents the worst state of having no healthy food that's affordable. Using worms and even more rotten parts to represent this. Also for each apple I decided to use a sticker on the apple to represent the price of the current apple. For each picture each apple increases in price as the apple gets worse.

|
|
Now I start working on the lettering for each apple, I decided that the words would correspond with the apples state. I also used specific colors to also represent how good the apple is at that point. Green, yellow and red like the colors from the traffic lights since I thought this would fit with the meaning.

-Critique-
When looking at these two art works you can see some similarity and differences at a quick glance. Something that you can clearly see is the repetition used in my art just like my inspiration, by doing this im able to convey my message better. Using the same or a similar image you're able to see the progression through the art and the meaning becomes clear. Although with the simulates you can see plenty of differences as well one main one being the repetition isn't exact copies of each other. Another difference that you can see is that in my inspiration he uses a plain white background while in my own art i decided to create a unique background for each piece.
-Reflection-
This project was a lot harder then I first anticipated, I went through so many ideas and reworked a lot of aspects of the artwork before coming to a conclusive finished idea. Once I had come to the end of the reworking part I was finally bale to really start working on my project and even that was really hard. Since I wanted people to notice that all these artworks go together I really focused on making things like the table the same. I also spent a lot of time with choosing the colors that I worked with, this was a lot harder since they all needed to work together but I didn't want them all to have one single color palette. Although even though this was a harder project then I had originally thought I really enjoyed the process in the end. I had a lot of fun being able to do research and deciding on smaller details. In the end I'm happy that I did spend as much time as i did into this piece, the end product really made it all worth it in the end.
