Title: Retribution
Size: 3 ft x 3 ft Medium: Acrylic paint on canvas Completed: April 2023 |
- Exhibition Text -This artwork represents my hatred for political figures especially for the 45th president. Since it's well known that he hates Mexicans and women I thought it would be fitting to have him in this artwork. I wanted to show how his influence negatively affected me and those around me.

- Inspiration -
For my Inspiration I chose someone that I've always loved ever since I found her. Artemisia Gentileschi is a well known artist from the 1600's. Her paintings come out so clean and well painted that it just makes looking at it enjoyable.
Artemisia always painted women in power over men since it was something important to her. I really enjoyed how passion she is about her own paintings. |
-Planning-
When starting this project I knew exactly what painting I wanted to insert myself into. I started off with just the basic shapes and placement of everything. After that I went in and added a bit of details while still keeping it simple. I wanted to have a clean sketch where I would add the details later on.

-Process-
I start my work with painting trump since I thought it would be easier since he doesn't have much skin showing and his suit would be easy to paint. I didn't put much time on the face or hair since I just wanted to get the size of it correct I plan to come back to the hair and face later on to work on it. I then move all my focus on the clothes
I now move on to the ground and background. I knew that I couldn't have the background and the floor be the same color since it would cause confusion and it would just look bad overall. I still wanted the ground to be a dark color but I needed it to stand out from the background. I went with a dark brown that was sill light enough to be able to tell the difference with black.
|
I then start working on the dress. I started with the dark shadows and worked up to white. Since the dress itself was white I needed to find a way to make sure it would be seen within the art while still having dark shadows. While finishing the background I also worked on the nail and hammer. I left it last since it was the easiest and smallest part of the painting. Although it was harder to paint because i needed to make sure that it didn't blend in with the background.
Once finishing I went back to worked on adding more finer details. I first went back to trumps face since it was the roughest out of everything. Using a reference I ended up making him more red since I liked the idea more. Since red represents the feeling of anger I wanted to show how my anger is on him.
|
I also went back and added deeper shadows into my painting since I wanted to create depth. I wanted to give off the illusion of a strong light coming so I made the shadows more sharper and darker to give off that feeling. I also added slightly lighter parts where the light would be directly hitting.

-Critique-
Similarities:
The biggest similarity is obvious in the pose, it's the exact same. Other similarities are the lighting, you can see that the lighting is coming from the same angle causing the same shadows. |
Differences:
The biggest difference with these two works is the material and blending. Instead of using oil paint like the original artist I used acrylic, the different material cause changes in the work. The original artist has more cleaner and smother blending with the work and mine is more rougher. |
-Reflection-
Looking back I wish I put aside more time to work on this art since I believe that I could have worked on the smaller details more if I had more time. Although in the end I don't hate my art as much as I thought I would, I do think it came out better then I thought it would be. I found that I had a lot of fun painting the clothes since it had a lot of wrinkles and it was just nice to see them form with time.
