Exhibition Text
In this artwork the use a mix of different media forms to express what I envision a world with true freedom would look like. Using water color I was able to express a world without humans since humans will always put limits on thing meaning its not true freedom. |
-Inspiration-
When deciding on what I wanted to for this project I decided to look into watercolor artist. That when I came across Georgia O'Keeffe and I knew that I wanted to use her as my inspiration. I really enjoyed how she used her watercolors to create these really cool transitions from light to dark in her artwork. I also really like the sharpness but overlaps she has in her art, it really gives her art more personality. Georgia O'Keeffe also has this sense of freedom that comes from her art especially from her landscape artworks. I really liked the idea of portraying freedom though the art and the material so that's what I decided I would do.
-Planning-
Knowing that I wanted to represent the meaning of true freedom i decided that I wanted to feature nature in some way. Since nature gives off a really strong sense of freedom I thought about how I would incorporate nature in my work in a way that it would represent freedom. For my first sketch I decided to think of the idea of having nature surround a person. In this sketch I really like the idea of a bunch of flowers surrounding someone laying on the ground.
|
The next sketch I worked on comes from the idea of being able to hang out with whoever you want is freedom. For this I drew a ground of children who would be from different ethnicities and religions all surrounding a TV together. This would represent how with freedom people from different groups can still come together and enjoy each other's company. Although with this concept I really liked the idea of how freedom could represent the ability to connect with others even though you might be different I didn't like the concept 100%.
|
For my last concept I really looked into what I personally though what true freedom would look like. In my mind true freedom is a world without any humans because no matter what you'll never be yourself all the time with others around. So with this concept I decided to sketch out a tree in the clouds. The clouds would bring a sort of fantasy look to the painting and give off a more magical feel to the look.

-Process-
The first thing that I do is move my sketch onto my paper and make sure its a clean and well though out version. I place everything intentionally and make sure that everything seems to fit well in the environment. once my sketch is perfect I then go in with an underlayer for the artwork. I chose blue since I already want to make the background a light blue since its the sky.
The first part that I work on is the wood part of the tree. This is because since it'll mostly be the underpart of the tree with the leaves being more of a trust the process I want to make sure the tree is finished before then. When deciding on the colors of the tree I decide to use more oranges, reds and purples instead of the normal brown colors. This decision was based off the fact that these colors would make the tree look more livelier and would help it look more colorful. Instead I used the browns in the shadows so viewers will associate the color colors with brown and that way it'll make it look normal.
|
The next part was the leaves of the tress, when working on the leaves I decide to use a larger brush and use more of a loose technique. This is because since my meaning is freedom I feel like using my methods of how I create the work also enhance the meaning of this piece. For the leaves I decide on instead of creating the individual leaf's I would make them into groups. This gives the leaves more of a cloud look and that helps with the meaning of freedom since clouds reflect that feeling.

-Critique-
Within my art you can see the sort of inspirations I took, I wanted to make my art have a similar feel to my inspiration but still stand out on its own. I wanted to create a somewhat smooth color transition in my art while still having a hard line in some parts. A big difference you can see in the art is the fact that I ended up using mixed media unlike my inspiration that used one solid media. I wanted to bring life to my painting by using mixed media since the cotton balls brings in extra texture to my painting unlike in my inspiration the use of one media that makes the art look extremely smooth.
-Reflection-
This project was definitely a learning process since this was the very first time I worked with water color. This means that I had to spend a lot more time trying to figure out the best way possible to work with this new material. I ended up watching a lot of videos and doing a lot of research on how the material works and learning that way. I originally thought that water color would be a really hard product to work with but it wasn't as bad as I though it would be. In the end I found out that water color isn't as hard as it seems but it just takes a lot of time to really understand the material and how to work with it.
